9 Things to do in Hingham Over School Vacation Week

1)   Winter Farm Quest

Start off the school vacation week with some barnyard questing at the Weir River Farm, 40 Turkey Hill Lane, in Hingham. The quest instructions will be available at the Turkey Hill Lane parking lot. This is a FREE event and sounds like fun too. Quests are like treasure hunts where you follow clues each step of the way. Each clue gives you instruction that will lead you to the next location. While the activity begins on Monday, December 26th, you can participate on any day of the school vacation week.

2)   Playgroup in Hingham

On every Tuesday morning there is a parent/toddler playgroup that meets at St. John the Evangelist Church, 172 Main Street, in Hingham. Hosted by the South Shore Family Network, the group meets from 9:00 am until 10:30 am and has play group facilitators who provide multiple enhancing activities that are all age-appropriate. The age range is from 18 months to 3 years old.

3)   2 Day Children’s Art Workshop

How about exposing your children to some structured painting over the vacation week? Children’s Art Workshop at MacMurray Designs, 200 Weymouth Street, in Rockland, is offering painting workshops for children ages 7-9, 9-12 and 12-15. Each workshop is separated by age groups and geared towards having fun while also learning some skills. The workshops are step-by-step and involve painting on a 16 x 20 inch canvas. The workshops run from 9:30 am until 1:30 pm so please be sure to bring peanut free snacks and a lunch. All art supplies are included in the two day registration price of $95.

4)   Toddler New Skaters

It’s a good week to see if your toddlers might take to ice skating at the Pilgrim Skating Arena, 75 Recreation Park Drive, in Hingham. On Tuesday, December 27th, there will be two serious, one at 10:15 am and another at 1:15 pm, where children pre-school through Kindergarten can don helmets, mittens or gloves and take to the ice. Note that this is not a lesson, and that parents are not allowed on the ice. No need to register, just show up and pay $4 when you get there.

5)   Hanukkah Storytime

The Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt Street, in Hingham is hosting a Hanukkah Storytime on Tuesday, December 27th at 10:30 am. This is geared for children ages 0-5 and is a FREE event.

6)   Make Bead Mosaics

The “Crafternoon” series at the Marshfield Ventress Memorial Library, 15 Library Plaza, in Marshfield is presenting an opportunity to learn how to make Perler bead/fuse bead mosaics for those Grade 2 and older starting at 3:30 pm, Tuesday, December 27th. This is a FREE event. Perler Beads are small beads that melt to create mosaics. Using creativity and a regular household iron this Swedish craft is a fun way to surprise yourself!

7)   Pop Up Art School

The Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt Street, in Hingham is hosting Pop Up Art School on Tuesday, December 27th starting at 3:30 pm. This is a FREE event for children ages 8 – 14 and pre-registration is required by calling 781-741-1405, ext.1403.

8)   Fancy Nancy Tea Party

The Ventress Memorial Library, 15 Library Plaza, in Marshfield is hosting a fancy tea party for children and adults on December 29th, from 4:00 pm until 5:30 pm. Have your child bring their most favorite adult for a very fancy afternoon with refreshments and activities. Create a foam Tiara or Crown/ Bow Tie to decorate with jewels and stickers and have a Mini French lesson with handouts to practice at home. Then be sure to listen to the Fancy Nancy story.

9)   KEVA Planks Long Bridge Challenge

On Thursday, December 29th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm come join in the fun of building a long bridge with Keva Planks and blocks. The Children’s & Young Adult Department are joining together to offer an opportunity for children in grades 4 to grade 8 to make the square towers and create an elevated bridge. No registration is necessary.
