5 Things to do in Hingham This Weekend

1) 2nd Annual Race for P.E.A.C.E. 5K/1 Mile Walk

The 2nd Annual Race for P.E.A.C.E. 5K/1 Mile Walk is happening at Bare Cove Park this Sunday, April 10th at 8:00 am to benefit Martin Richard. Martin, age 8, was killed in the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, 2013. A photograph of Martin holding a handmade sign that said, “No more hurting people. Peace,” became a symbol of peace. The Richard family established the Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation to honor Martin’s message of peace by investing in education, athletics and community.

2) Star Wars at the Hingham Library

Take in an afternoon movie at the Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt Street from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, April 9. The film being shown this weekend is The Empire Strikes Back, a remastered edition of the original Star Wars trilogy movie.

3) Learn How to Grow Raspberries

Learn the basics of growing ‘bramble’ fruits like red, yellow, or black raspberries in this two hour workshop at the Marshfield Fairgrounds, 140 Main Street in Marshfield, on Sunday, April 10th from 10:00 until 12:00 noon. Participants will find out about the unique growth requirements for raspberries, learn about pruning methods and get variety specific tools to handle growing challenges. Topics to be covered by instructor Sonia Schloemann include variety selection, soil requirements, planting recommendations, pest management, with time left for questions. Hands on instruction will also be offered. Some raspberry canes may be available for purchase.

4) Learn How to Grow Strawberries

If you feel revved up after learning all about raspberries, or if you simply prefer strawberries, another growing workshop is happening on Sunday, April 10th from 1:00 until 3:00 pm at the Marshfield Fairgrounds, 140 Main Street in Marshfield. Strawberries are one of the more flexible fruits grown in our area in that they produce in very small areas and even in pots. Sonia Schloemann will talk about variety selection, soil requirements, planting methods and pest management. Methods of pruning will be taught and practiced in the hands-on portion of the workshop. Several varieties of bare root strawberry plants will be available for purchase.

5) Mass Audubon’s 100th Day Celebration

Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuaries across the state celebrate the 100th day of the year by offering free admission, nature walks, and hands-on activities for children. Enjoy a naturalist led walk at noon on some of the most beautiful landscape around, and learn some things about the natural habitat of the South Shore of Boston on Saturday, April 9th from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. The closest Audubon Sanctuary to Hingham is the North River Wildlife Sanctuary at 2000 Main Street in Marshfield and they will have cookies and lemonade on hand, as well as some hands-on activities for children.
